General Information
The Old Log Church Museum is a small community museum responsible for documenting, preserving and sharing Yukon’s spirited history. We strive to provide our visitors with an enjoyable & educational experience. Located in downtown Whitehorse, the museum (a designated territorial and municipal heritage site) is housed in a unique log church built by Reverend R.J. Bowen in 1900. The museum houses displays of objects used by the early church and its members throughout the territory and offers guided tours on a number of themes.
Job Description
The Heritage Interpreters will serve as an integral part of the Old Log Church Museum team. They will perform museum front line duties including receiving visitors to the museum, collecting admission and orienting visitors, delivering interpretive tours, and conducting gift shop sales. The Heritage Interpreters, under the guidance of the Executive Director, will be given the opportunity to review and update our educational programming. Other tasks include developing and delivering special events, working with other staff to produce the museum's newsletter, and assisting the Executive Director by completing administrative tasks as required.
Qualifications
• Strong interest in history, especially Yukon history, as well as an interest in working in museum interpretation and programming.
• Post-Secondary study in a related field including but not limited to museum studies, history, education, performance, theatre, anthropology, archaeology, First Nations studies, or tourism.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Comfortable and willing to speak publically.
• Experience conducting research.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Office administration and/or filing skills.
• Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
• Proficient in the use of computers including MS Office Word and Excel.
• Experience working with databases and Adobe Suite is considered an asset.
• Fluency in French, German or another language is considered an asset.
• First Aid certification is considered an asset.

This position is funded in part by the Young Canada Works program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. YCW criteria states that candidates must be between the ages of 16 and 30 years, Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or have refugee status in Canada; legally entitled to work in Canada; have been a full-time student in the semester preceding the YCW job and intend to return to full-time studies in the fall.
Necessary training and support will be provided. All summer student positions are 16 weeks in duration, 40 hours per week (May to September, 2019). To qualify for this position, candidates must be between 16 and 30 years, Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or have refugee status in Canada; legally entitled to work in Canada; have been a full-time student in the semester preceding the job and intend to return to full-time studies in the fall.
